TMJ & TMD care
Jaw Pain Isn't Always Just a Jaw Joint Problem
Jaw symptoms can show up as aching, clicking, locking, headaches, facial pain, ear pressure, neck tension, or pain with chewing. The right plan depends on what your examination shows—not on a one-size-fits-all label.
Understand What Is Driving Your Symptoms
We look at how your jaw moves, how your neck and muscles contribute, how your tongue rests, how you breathe, and what happens with chewing, clenching, and sleep.
Leave With a Clear Plan
When appropriate, treatment begins at your first visit, with a practical home program built around your goals so you know what to do between visits.
Part of a Team Approach
Physical therapy works alongside—not instead of—appropriate dental, medical, or sleep care. If another provider's input would help, we'll explain the next step.
What we evaluate
Symptoms We Can Help Evaluate
You don't need to know exactly what is causing your symptoms before contacting us. Your evaluation helps determine whether physical therapy is appropriate and what may be contributing.
Jaw Pain, Clicking & Locking
- Jaw pain or soreness
- Clicking or popping when opening or closing
- Locking, catching, or limited opening
- Pain or fatigue with chewing, yawning, or talking
Headaches, Facial Pain & Ear Pressure
- Headaches that may start at the temples or behind the eyes
- Facial pain, pressure, or tension
- Ear pressure or fullness alongside jaw symptoms
- Neck tension that seems connected to your jaw
Sleep, Breathing & Tongue Posture
- Mouth breathing or difficulty keeping the tongue resting up
- Snoring, restless sleep, or waking unrefreshed
- Jaw tension that increases overnight or with clenching
- Difficulty coordinating breathing, swallowing, or tongue posture
Difficulty Eating, Speaking, or Yawning
- Difficulty chewing or avoiding certain foods
- Pain with talking, singing, or yawning
- Fatigue from holding your jaw a certain way
- Feeling like your bite or jaw movement is changing
Breathing and sleep concerns may be part of the overall picture, but physical therapy is not a substitute for dental, medical, or sleep evaluation.

Your first visit
What to Expect From Your Jaw Pain Evaluation
Your first visit is a 60-minute, one-on-one evaluation and treatment session with a Doctor of Physical Therapy, at home, at work, or in another private setting. Before it ends, you'll understand what we found, why it may be happening, and what your next step should be.
- Tell us your full story. When symptoms started, what brings them on, and how they affect chewing, speaking, yawning, working, exercising, breathing, and sleep.
- A focused TMD evaluation. Jaw opening and closing, joint and muscle assessment, neck movement, posture, tongue posture, breathing pattern, clenching, and chewing.
- Treatment starts with what we find. When appropriate, care begins the same visit.
- If another provider is a better starting point, we'll explain why and help guide you rather than treating outside our scope.
Treatment
What TMD Treatment Can Include
Treatment is chosen from your evaluation and goals. Some people need a few focused visits; others benefit from a longer plan.
Hands-On Care
Joint and muscle techniques for the jaw and neck when appropriate.
Soft-Tissue Work
Treatment for tight, overworked chewing and neck muscles.
Dry Needling
Used when appropriate as one part of your plan, not the whole plan. Currently offered in South Bend & Michiana and Southwest Michigan.
Myofunctional Therapy
Breathing, tongue-posture, and swallowing retraining.
Targeted Exercises
Jaw, neck, and movement retraining matched to what we find.
A Home Plan You'll Use
Simple routines to help you eat, speak, sleep, and work more comfortably.
Working with your dentist
Physical Therapy as Part of Your TMD Care Team
TMD often involves more than one provider. When symptoms suggest that dental, oral-surgery, medical, or sleep-related input would help, we'll explain why and help you understand the next step. With your permission, we can coordinate with the providers already involved in your care.
Dentists and physicians can refer patients directly.
Payment
Private Pay, Explained Up Front
ECPT is a private-pay practice, and payment is due at the time of service. We'll go over cost with you before your first visit, so there are no surprises.
Commercial Insurance
We provide an itemized invoice (often called a superbill) for patients with commercial insurance who wish to seek reimbursement through out-of-network benefits.
Medicare
ECPT is a private-pay practice and does not bill Medicare.
HSA and FSA
HSA and FSA cards can't be used for ECPT visits.
Questions
Questions About TMJ Physical Therapy
Do I need to know what is causing my jaw pain?
No. Jaw and facial symptoms can show up in many ways. Your evaluation helps determine whether physical therapy is appropriate and what may be contributing.
Will you work with my dentist?
Yes. With your permission, we can coordinate with your dentist, oral surgeon, physician, or other providers involved in your care. Physical therapy works alongside, not instead of, appropriate dental and medical care.
Can treatment begin during the first visit?
When appropriate, yes. The first visit includes both evaluation and treatment, and you'll leave with a plan for what to do between visits.
How long are visits?
Your first visit is a full 60 minutes, one-on-one with a Doctor of Physical Therapy. After that, visits run 45, 60, or 90 minutes, depending on your plan, goals, and availability.
Do I need a referral or prescription?
In many cases, you can begin physical therapy without a physician referral. However, depending on your medical history, surgery, diagnosis, insurance situation, or state-specific requirements, we may recommend or require coordination with your physician.
Do you bill insurance or Medicare?
ECPT is a private-pay practice and does not bill Medicare. For patients with commercial insurance, we provide an itemized invoice (often called a superbill) to submit for out-of-network reimbursement. Reimbursement depends on your plan.
Where do visits take place?
Your therapist comes to you—your home, office, private gym, senior living residence, or another appropriate private space—in South Bend & Michiana, Southwest Michigan, and Naples & Southwest Florida.
